Master’s Course Study on the Digital Euro

Flensburg, 18/02/2026: As part of Prof. Dr. Kay Pfaffenberger’s Master program, he and the students of the course African New Markets conducted a study on the potential impact of the digital euro on selected African economies. The project explored possible economic and financial implications of a European central bank digital currency in an international context.

The debate gained further momentum at Bundesbank Spotlight hosted by the Deutsche Bundesbank, where Joachim Nagel described the digital euro as a strategic step toward greater European autonomy, reducing reliance on providers such as Visa and Mastercard. A possible launch is currently envisaged for 2029.

The course findings underline that the digital euro is not only a European reform project, but also a development with meaningful implications for African markets and international economic cooperation.
