Berlin, 09/10/2023: In a new Africa.Table article, Stefan Liebing shares his concern about the BMZ’s new strategy on Africa. He argues that the strategy is not sufficient to promote more investment and jobs in Africa, although the needs are obvious.
Africa is facing growing challenges due to crises, inflation, high public debt and climatic problems. The need for economic growth and investment in Africa is urgent as discontent among young populations fosters unrest and refugee numbers rise.
Liebing stresses the importance of risk hedging to encourage German companies to invest in Africa. He calls on the German government to support companies through guarantees and insurance instead of financing traditional development projects.
The “Partnership for Transformation” proposed by BMZ is criticised by Liebing, as in his opinion it is not sufficient to improve the situation in Africa. He calls for adjustments and a reduction of bureaucratic hurdles to encourage investment in Africa and support development. In view of the challenges in Africa, urgent action is needed.
