Flensburg, 25/08/2023: On 5-6 October, the Leibniz University Hanover is hosting an international conference on “The Future of Higher Education and Science – A Turn of the Times?“. The event is organised by the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) and the Leibniz Center for Science and Society (LCSS).
Regarding the aim and topic of the event, the organiser states:
Due to the many current crises and their ramifications, higher education and science are facing great challenges: refugee students and scientists are arriving at universities, international mobility and cooperation in science are burdened by new uncertainties, and long-term demographic change has its implications. These concomitants of the “turn of the times” form a context that calls for an intensification of international networking in higher education research and science studies. This is the aim of this conference jointly organised by LCSS and DZHW. Envisaged topics are for example: international perspectives on the governance of higher education and science, measuring of academic freedom, scientific careers in transition, diversity of regional research cultures in the global science system, and multiple competition in science and higher education.
Kay Pfaffenberger will participate on behalf of the CBTA and give a presentation on “Energy transition and the consequences for Africa: Higher education as a necessity to save African businesses” on the second day of the event. He will address the EU’s planned investments in renewable energy and hydrogen projects, with no mention of the need for skilled workers. There is a danger that not enough will be available. Here he sees Universities of Applied Sciences as a possible solution to train qualified teachers for vocational education.
