Flensburg, 25/10/2022: Participants of TRAJECTS’ mobile school in October learn about the challenges of coal dependency in Mpumalanga (South Africa) and imagine a vision for a just transition in the province.
The Transnational Centre for Just Transitions in Energy, Climate and Sustainability (TRAJECTS) is one of the four DAAD-funded Global Climate and Environment Centres. Its aim is to support and strengthen transcontinental exchange, research, and education on transitions towards a sustainable future.
TRAJECTS main objective is to focus on climate change mitigation in the following key sustainability just transition areas:
- Fossil fuel phase-out and shift towards post-fossil energy system
- Fundamental shifts in land use and management, as well as ecosystem protection
Given the complexity of these issues, TRAJECTS groups a large diversity of expertise and actors, offering local as well as transnational answers and perspectives towards just transitions necessary to protect our shared climate and environment and achieve a sustainable future.
Besides the DAAD Climate Centre, Prof. Dr. Pao-Yu Oei as Professor for “Economics of the Transformation of Energy Systems” at the European University Flensburg (EUF) also heads both the degree programme “Industrial Engineering: Energy and Environmental Management” and the 30-member research group “CoalExit” at EUF, TU Berlin and DIW Berlin. Furthermore, he coordinates the independent research centre CoalTransitions, which is represented by more than 60 researchers from 25 research institutions on 5 continents and investigates the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Within the framework of the cooperation with the EUF, the Centre for Business and Technology in Africa (CBTA) supports TRAJECTS.
